A bodybuilder named Giuliano Pirone, 33-year-old died after spending “15 hours unconscious in a gym shower without anyone noticing,” according to ABC.net.au.
Pirone “suffered a brain injury and was placed in an induced coma,” The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported, adding that he was on life support in a hospital for two weeks. The incident occurred in Perth, Australia.
According to ABC, Pirone collapsed in a shower stall on August 20 and was not discovered until police rang his phone after his family said they didn’t know where he was. According to ABC, police broke down the shower door to get to Pirone.
The Facebook page by Giuliano Pirone contains photos of him in the gym, as well as with a small child. According to The Australian, Giuliano Pirone was at the gym because he was training for an upcoming bodybuilding competition. The Australian noted that the competition would have been his first and Pirone was excited about it.
The death has raised concerns in Australia about safety issues at gyms.

According to ABC, Pirone was discovered lying under “cold running water.”
“I will never look at the sun, the moon and the sky the same way again, the light that once shone has left me,” her mother Daniela Pirone told ABC Radio Perth, according to ABC.net.au.
According to West Australian, Giuliano Pirone was a father. He had gone to a gym that was open 24 hours a day when he felt “ill,” the site reported.
The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Pirone’s mother as saying that surveillance video showed Pirone bumping into equipment before going to the shower. “He staggers into the showers, holding his stomach,” she told the Morning Herald. “(He) must have locked himself in, felt hot, turned on the cold water and, bang!, he collapsed.”

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, while the cause of death has not been released, doctors believe Pirone’s blood sugar levels “dropped dramatically and his blood pressure dropped, which could have triggered a seizure.” However, it is unclear what caused his blood sugar levels to plummet. Her mother expressed concern about why it took her so long to realize Pirone was in the shower.
“My beautiful son was alone on that floor, he collapsed, hit his head for about 15 hours and no one noticed anything,” she told the Sydney Morning Herald.
“His car was parked right in front of the gym because it was 4.55am when he checked in,” she told the Morning Herald. “The showers are 20 metres from reception and no one noticed anything. Are the showers not cleaned? I am flabbergasted.”

The Australian reported Pirone was reported missing when she failed to return home from work.
